Dutch road-rage thriller Tailgate has snagged a US buyer at the start of AFM Online.
The film is to be released in the States by Film Movement in a deal announced by Montreal-based sales outfit Attraction.
Scripted and directed by Lodewijk Crijns, Tailgate (aka Bumperkleef) was produced by Topkapi Films in the Netherlands in co-production with Belgian outfit Savage Film.
It was released locally in 2019 becoming a popular and critical success, with the Dutch film critics’ circle voting it Dutch film of the year.
Tailgate sees a Dutch family on a road trip get into a vicious dispute with a man in a white van, who becomes infuriated by the father’s arrogant driving and seeks retribution. Jeroen Spitzenberger stars.
Tailgate has also now sold to India (BookMyShow). The US and Indian deals follow sales announced earlier this summer including Japan (New Select), Korea (Challan), the UK (Signature), France (Trade Media), Russia/CIS (Volga) and mainland China (Jetsen).

Thomas Vinterberg’s ANOTHER ROUND has been nominated for the 33rd European Film Awards in four categories.
Mike Downey, Chairman of the EFA Board: “In order to widen the platform to more European films in what is such a difficult time for European cinema and artists, the EFA Board has decided to exceptionally increase the nominations in the full length feature film categories and in the documentary category from five to six.”
The more than 3,800 EFA Members will now vote for the winners who will be presented in a series of virtual events from 8 to 12 December.

We are delighted and proud to inform you that ANOTHER ROUND has been shortlisted as one of the three Danish entries for the Best International Feature Film category at the 93rd Academy Awards®.
The Danish Oscar Commitee will announce the official Danish Oscar candidate on 18 November 2020, and the final nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards will be announced on 13 March 2021. The ceremony will take place on 25 April 2021 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
ANOTHER ROUND has been off to a skyrocketing start already. The drama received the official selection label at Cannes Film Festival 2020 as well as Toronto International Film Festival 2020, where the film had its international premiere and was highly praised among buyers and media. In addition, the leading cast of the film recently won the Silver Shell for ‘Best Actor’ at the 68th San Sebastian Film Festival, and yesterday, the film received the LFF Virtual Audience Award for ‘Best Film’ at the BFI London Film Festival 2020.
ANOTHER ROUND has not only been praised among media, buyers and festivals. The drama has had an overwhelming number of admissions since its local release on 24 September 2020 – with currently more than 500,000 admissions sold in Denmark despite current covid-19 restrictions.
With this new drama, Vinterberg has re-united a major part of his team from the heartrending drama THE HUNT (2012), which took the world audience by storm and was nominated for a Golden Globe® and an Academy Award® and screened In Competition in Cannes.
Vinterberg’s reunion includes fellow Academy Award®-nominee and co-screenwriter Tobias Lindholm as well as internationally acclaimed actors Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Lars Ranthe and Magnus Millang, who previously starred in Vinterberg’s dramas THE COMMUNE (2016) and THE COMMAND (2018).

On October 8, the Topkapi Award for Best Fiction Film was awarded as a part of the annual Nederlandse Filmacademie Festival Keep an Eye.
This year’s prize, a festival trip of choice for the crew, was won by Harmonia.
The jury consisted of Emo Weemhoff (D.O.P.), Giancarlo Sanchez (director), Achmed Akabi (actor and showrunner), Sacha Gertsik (creative producer, script editor & founder of ‘De Ontmoeting’) and Max de Wolf (producer at Topkapi Films).
From the jury report:
While the world outside has literally come to a standstill, within the walls of the Film Academy very special, artisanal, impressive films were created this year. This batch is full of confidence, as if they are yelling at the industry: Come on, then! They treat large themes in small and large stories. The jury would like to tell them in name of the industry: your ambition and talent has been seen. This makes choosing the best fiction film for the Topkapi Award even more difficult. After hours of fierce debate the choice fell on a graduation film that wouldn’t let go of them. The tension build-up in the story, that was reached through ominous sound design and stylistic camera work, demonstrates confidence and shows that the crew moved harmoniously during the making of this film.
The narrative is cohesive but leaves enough room for the audience to engage. It is a daring film, in which many plates are kept spinning and in which, in all honesty, also a couple of those plates are shattered on the floor. But the plates that stayed intact, amongst which a bold move to capture a grand story within one single moment from a single life, stand out more than the missed opportunities. The originality to choose to tell a story on a something that plagues an entire generation in such a stylized manner, and the beautiful end scene that shifts this one life to a much wider perspective in a single shot, have made us decide that this film should be celebrated.
Story:
While Philine tries to secure a seat in the most prestigious boat of her university rowing club, a mysterious voice penetrates her university campus. The voice is looking for unity and connectedness in a world where everybody, trapped in isolation, is pursuing their individual goals.

Halina Reijn’s INSTINCT was nominated for the EUROPEAN DISCOVERY 2020 – Prix FIPRESCI, an annual award that is part of the European Film Awards and is granted to a director for a debut feature film.
The six nominated films are selected by a commission that consists of the EFA board Members
Valérie Delpierre (Spain) and Anita Juka (Croatia), curator Giona A. Nazzaro (Italy) and film journalists Marta Balaga (Finland/Poland), Andrei Plakhov (Russia) and Frédéric Ponsard (France), all three representatives of FIPRESCI, the International Federation of Film critics.

Over 100.000 visitors went to see Instinct, the debut film of Halina Reijn and openings film of the Netherlands film festival 2019, in the Dutch theatres. Director Halina Reijn and the main actor Carice van Houten received the award from the Netherlands Film Festival and the Netherlands Filmfund.
Instinct is the debut film of Halina Reijn and was written by Esther Gerritsen based on an idea by Halina Reijn inspired by true events.
Instinct is the Dutch Oscars submission and has been screened and multiple international film festivals as Locarno, Toronto, London, Chicago.
The golden film, the platinum film and the diamond film awards are an initiative by the Netherlands film festival and the Netherlands filmfund. Films receive the awards when 100.000, 400.000 and 1.000.000 visitors go to see the movie in the Dutch theatres respectively.

Instinct, the directorial debut of director Halina Reijn, wins three awards at Les Arcs Film festival in the French Alps. The film, produced by Topkapi Films, wins the Young Audience Award and the Cineuropa prize. Main character Carice van Houten is awarded with Best Performance.
Halina Reijn and Carice van Houten are thrilled with this news: “We were so honored to even be showed in the official competition of this festival and with Isabelle Hupperts praise, who came to the screening. The three prizes on top of that are just beyond amazing.”
Producer Frans van Gestel (Topkapi Films) proudly adds: “It’s fantastic to see Instinct go around the world. We’re delighted that it is being received well not only by the international festival’s jury, but also by the young audience.”
Co-producers Halina Reijn and Carice van Houten are on cloud nine at the set of their new series Red Light: “We are very motivated and inspired to keep on going forward with our production company Man Up”.
Synopsis
Nicoline, an experienced psychologist, starts a new job at a penal institution. She meets Idris, a sex offender who committed a series of grave crimes. After five years of treatment, he is about to go on his first unaccompanied probation. His team of practitioners are enthusiastic about his development but newcomer Nicoline does not trust him and tries to push his probation. Idris tries his hardest to convince Nicoline of his good intentions, but slowly but surely, he transforms into the manipulative man she saw in him from the beginning. A power play emerges between the two and Nicoline, in spite of her knowledge and experience, lets herself be trapped completely.
Instinct was written by Esther Gerritsen based on an idea by Halina Reijn inspired by true events. The main roles are played by Carice van Houten and Marwan Kenzari. Supporting roles are filled by Marie-Mae van Zuilen, Ariane Schluter, Betty Schuurman, Pieter Embrechts, Tamar van den Dop, Robert de Hoog, Juda Goslinga and Akwasi Owusu Ansah.
Les Arcs Film Festival is located at a ski resort In the French Alps. While the first snow falls, films are shown in the presence of the makers and the evenings are dedicated to special events. 120 European films are shown at the festival and mainly French films are premiered.
Instinct is produced by Topkapi Films in co-production with Man Up and BNNVARA. The film was realized with the support of The Netherlands Film Fund, the Netherlands Film Production Incentive and CoBO.
Instinct has been in Dutch cinemas since October the 3rd and premiered earlier this year as the opening film of the Dutch Film Festival. Since then, the film has attracted more than 100,000 visitors. In addition, the film was selected for various foreign film festivals, such as Toronto, London and Locarno, where the film was awarded the Variety Piazza Grande award and the Special Mention of the debut competition. INSTINCT was also the Dutch entry for the Oscars. The film will be available on DVD and video-on-demand services, such as CineMember, from February 19th 2020.
