International success for Layla M

The new film by Mijke de Jong is now also selected for the competition of London BFI Film Festival 2016

Layla M. is now selected for the official competition of the acclaimed London BFI Film Festival, which will take place 5-16 October 2016. As announced earlier, Mijke de Jong’s new film will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival at the 10th of September.

Layla (18), a Dutch girl with Moroccan roots, joins a group of radical Muslims. She encounters a world that nurtures her ideas initially, but finally confronts her with an impossible choice.

Layla M. is the ninth feature film by Mijke de Jong. The screenplay is written by Jan Eilander in collaboration with Mijke de Jong. Previous films by Mijke de Jong are amongst others: Frailer (2014), Joy (2010), Katia’s Sister (2008) and Bluebird (2004).

The film is produced by Topkapi Films, in co-production with NTR, Menuet (Belgium, known for a.o. Belgica and The Broken Circle Breakdown), Chromosom (Germany, known for a.o. Oh Boy) and Schiwago Film (Germany).

Layla M. is supported by the Netherlands Film Fund, the Netherlands Film Production Incentive, NTR, CoBO, Eurimages, the Flanders Audiovisual Fund (VAF), Screen Flanders, the Belgian Federal Government’s tax shelter programme, Casa Kafka Pictures Movie Tax Shelter empowered by Belfius, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg GmbH, FFA German Federal Film Board, The Imaginarium Films, The Royal Film Commission Jordan and the creative Europe Programme of the European Union.

The film will be released by distributor Cinemien in Dutch cinema from November 17.
